sodium molybdate

Usage

  1. Water Treatment – The Largest Application:

It acts as a passivating inhibitor. The molybdate ion forms a protective, self-healing layer of iron-molybdate complexes (e.g., Fe₂(MoO₄)₃) on metal anodes, blocking corrosion sites.

  2. Agriculture – Micronutrient Fertilizer:

Converts nitrates to ammonium within the plant (essential for nitrogen assimilation). Used by rhizobia bacteria in legume root nodules to fix atmospheric nitrogen.

  3. Animal Nutrition – Feed Additive:

Molybdenum is a component of key metabolic enzymes in animals, such as xanthine oxidase (involved in uric acid formation and protein metabolism).

  4. Industrial & Chemical Manufacturing:

The starting material for producing various insoluble molybdates.

  5. Laboratory & Analytical Chemistry:

Used in classical "molybdenum blue" methods for the colorimetric determination of phosphate, silicate, and arsenate ions.

FAQs
  • What grade do I need?
    Created with Sketch.
    形状 Created with Sketch.
    · Industrial/Technical Grade: For corrosion inhibition, water treatment.

    · Agriculture/Fertilizer Grade: With guaranteed molybdenum content and low heavy metals.

    · Feed Grade: Highest purity with strict control of toxic impurities.

    · Reagent/Analytical Grade: For laboratory use.
  • Is it toxic or hazardous?
    Created with Sketch.
    形状 Created with Sketch.
It is generally considered low in toxicity but is not harmless. Key points:

    · Classification: It may be labeled as causing eye irritation and as hazardous to the aquatic environment (long-lasting effects).

    · Handling: Use with standard precautions (gloves, safety glasses). Avoid ingestion and inhalation of dust.

    · Environmental: It is a significant improvement over chromates but should still be prevented from entering waterways in large quantities.
  • How is it used in agriculture?

Soil Application: Blended into granular fertilizers (typically 0.5-2 lbs Mo/acre).

Foliar Spray: Dissolved in water and sprayed on plant leaves (commonly 50-100 grams per hectare).

Seed Treatment: Coating seeds with a dilute solution.
  • What should I look for on a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)?

    · Assay (Purity): Typically 99.0% min. for standard grade.

    · MoO₃ Content: ~58-60%.

    · Heavy Metal Impurities: Limits for Pb, As, Cd (critical for feed and fertilizer grades).

    · Chloride (Cl) & Sulfate (SO₄) Content: Important for certain catalytic or electroplating applications.

    · Physical Properties: Crystal form, bulk density.
