Nickel Carbonate Basic

Nickel Carbonate Basic is a light green powder. It's stable when exposed to air, doesn't absorb much moisture, and won't clump together under normal conditions. Under standard storage circumstances, it shows no corrosivity to most common metals including carbon steel, copper and aluminum. The density of Nickel Carbonate Basic is approximately 2.6 g/cm³. It has no distinct melting point; instead, it starts to decompose at temperatures above 300 °C and achieves complete decomposition at around 500 °C prior to reaching a boiling point.

nickel carbonate basic

Product Overview

WQ's Nickel Carbonate Basic, with the chemical formula NiCO₃·2Ni(OH)₂·4H₂O and CAS number 12607-70-4, is a versatile inorganic compound widely used in electroplating, catalyst production, and ceramic coloring. It appears as a light green powder—insoluble in water but easily dissolved in dilute acids. WQ's Nickel Carbonate Basic meets strict quality standards: its nickel content of 35-48%. It decomposes gradually when heated (starting at 300°C) to release water and carbon dioxide, forming nickel oxide—this controlled breakdown makes it ideal for thermal processing. Impurities are tightly limited: Pb (≤0.002%), Cu (≤0.002%), and Fe (≤0.002%), ensuring suitability for high-precision industrial tasks.

Product Benefits

1.Uniform Plating with Minimal Porosity

  • Unlike conventional nickel salts, it releases nickel ions steadily when formulated into plating baths, forming dense, low-porosity coatings that block corrosive agents from penetrating the base metal—ideal for high-humidity or corrosive industrial environments.

2.Enhanced Substrate Compatibility

  • Bonds seamlessly with tricky-to-plate substrates (including aluminum alloys and die-cast zinc) without pre-plating or complex surface activation, cutting down on process steps and labor costs.

3. Dual-Function Versatility

  • Serves both as a precursor for high-purity nickel salts and a direct colorant for ceramics. Its consistent chemical composition eliminates the need to source separate materials for different production lines, streamlining inventory management.

4. Eco-Friendlier Processing

  • Generates less acidic wastewater during dissolution compared to nickel sulfate. Its neutral-to-mild alkaline nature reduces the need for pH-adjusting chemicals, lowering your facility’s environmental footprint and compliance costs.

5. Long Shelf Life with Zero Clumping

  • Non-deliquescent and stable under standard storage conditions—no caking or hardening even after 12 months of storage. This ensures accurate dosing every time and minimizes material waste from unusable clumps.

Usage

1.Electroplating Pre-Treatment: Dissolved in dilute acids (e.g., sulfuric acid) to prepare nickel plating baths. It ensures steady nickel ion concentration, supporting high-quality plating for parts like fasteners, automotive components, and electrical contacts.

2.Catalyst Manufacturing:Serves as a precursor for nickel-based catalysts (used in hydrogenation reactions). Its controlled thermal decomposition yields high-purity nickel oxide, which is then reduced to active metallic nickel.

3.Ceramic & Pigment Production:Acts as a green colorant for ceramics, glazes, and enamel coatings. Its consistent composition ensures uniform, long-lasting color in fired products like tiles, tableware, and decorative ceramics.

4.Chemical Synthesis:Used to produce nickel salts (e.g., nickel acetate, nickel nitrate) for battery materials, agricultural additives, and fine chemical intermediates.

FAQ

What is the ideal temperature for dissolving this product?

25-35°C—this range balances dissolution speed and stability when mixing with dilute acids.

How to store Nickel Carbonate Basic?

Keep it in a sealed container in a cool, dry area. Avoid contact with strong acids or excessive moisture to prevent premature reaction.

Can it be used directly in electroplating baths?

No—it needs to be dissolved in dilute acids first to form a soluble nickel solution, which is then added to plating baths.

What is its transport classification?

It is classified as a non-dangerous good for transport (when properly packaged), simplifying logistics and reducing shipping costs.
