 Copper Oxide

Product Overview

W&Q'sCopper Oxide (commonly called cupric oxide) is a fundamental inorganic compound with the molecular formula CuO, CAS number 1317-38-0, and molecular weight 79.545. As a leading copper oxide factory, we produce this product as a fine black powder—ideal for uniform dispersion in ceramic glazes and glass melts.

This compound exhibits exceptional thermal and chemical stability: it has a density of 6.313 g/cm³ and a high melting point of 1446℃, allowing it to withstand the extreme temperatures of ceramic firing and glass production. It is insoluble in water but dissolves in acids, ammonia water, and ammonium chloride—forming a blue solution that simplifies integration into acidic formulations. Its fine particle size (D50: 1-10μm) ensures it mixes evenly, avoiding clumps that could cause defects in end products.

Product Benefits

1.Exceptional Thermal StabilityWith a melting point of 1446℃, our Copper Oxide remains stable during high-temperature ceramic firing and glass melting. It won’t degrade or evaporate, ensuring consistent color and performance in end products.

2.Low Impurity LevelsUltra-low Cd, Pb, and Fe content means our Copper Oxide won’t cause discoloration or safety issues. This makes it suitable for food-contact ceramics (e.g., plates, mugs) and high-quality glass products.

3.Uniform DispersionThe fine particle size (D50: 1-10μm) ensures the black powder mixes evenly into glazes and glass melts. This eliminates streaks, clumps, or uneven color—critical for achieving a smooth, professional finish.

4.Versatile Chemical CompatibilityIts ability to dissolve in acids, ammonia, and ammonium chloride lets you integrate it into a range of formulations. Whether you’re making ceramic glazes or specialty glass, it adapts to your process needs.

Usage

1. Chemical IndustryIt is the core raw material for synthesizing various copper salts such as copper chloride,       copper nitrate and copper sulfate. It acts as a high-efficiency catalyst in organic chemical synthesis, oxidation   reactions and dehydrogenation reactions, and is also used for preparing analytical reagents and chemical   auxiliaries.
2. Ceramic Glass and Enamel IndustryIt is a common inorganic colorant. It can present black, dark green and blue   colors after high-temperature firing, which is used for coloring ceramic blanks, glazes, daily glass, craft glass and   enamel products, improving the decorative effect and color fastness of finished products.
3. Electronics and New Energy IndustryIt can be used to produce semiconductor materials, thermistor   components and electronic ceramic materials. It is also applied to prepare battery electrode materials, improve       battery conductivity and stability, and widely used in electronic paste and electronic raw material production.
4. Metallurgical and Smelting Industry Used in copper smelting and purification process to extract high-purity   metallic copper. It can remove harmful impurities in the smelting of iron, non-ferrous metals and other metals,   and also serves as a flotation agent for mineral processing to assist in mineral separation and purification.
5.Other Industrial Uses

  a. It serves as an efficient flue gas desulfurizer and gas purification adsorbent, which can effectively absorb sulfur   dioxide and harmful gases in industrial waste gas, and is widely used in waste gas treatment and industrial air   purification.

  b. As a trace element copper additive for livestock and poultry feed, it supplements copper nutrients for animals,   promotes growth and development, and improves disease resistance of poultry and livestock.

  c. Used for preparing pharmaceutical intermediates and antibacterial raw materials; also applied in magnetic           materials, fireproof materials, abrasive materials and daily chemical auxiliary production.

FAQ

What is the appearance of copper oxide? How to distinguish its quality?

The appearance of high-quality copper oxide is pure black fine powder, with uniform color, no obvious impurities, no agglomeration, and good fluidity (it can be smoothly poured when placed in a container).
Quality distinction methods:
  • Visual inspection: Observe the color and uniformity; if there are gray, brown or other discolored particles, or obvious agglomeration, the purity may be unqualified.

  • Solubility test: Take a small amount of copper oxide and add it to dilute sulfuric acid; high-quality copper oxide can quickly dissolve to form a blue copper sulfate solution without obvious precipitation.

  • Certificate inspection: Check the COA (Certificate of Analysis) provided by the supplier, which clearly marks the purity, impurity content, and other indicators to confirm whether it meets the required specifications.

How to store copper oxide correctly? What is its shelf life?

Storage requirements:
  • Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated warehouse, avoid damp and high temperature (the storage temperature should be between 5℃-30℃).

  • Seal the packaging tightly after use to prevent moisture absorption and contamination (copper oxide is slightly hygroscopic, and long-term exposure to air will absorb moisture and cause caking).

  • It should be stored separately from strong acids, strong alkalis, reducing agents and food additives to avoid chemical reactions or cross-contamination.

Is copper oxide easy to absorb moisture? What should I do if it agglomerates due to moisture absorption?

Copper oxide is slightly hygroscopic, which means it will absorb a small amount of moisture in the air when exposed to air for a long time, but it will not undergo chemical changes; if the moisture absorption is serious, it may cause agglomeration.
Processing method for agglomeration: If slight agglomeration occurs, it can be crushed manually or with a crusher to restore the powder state, and it can be used normally (without affecting the product performance); if the agglomeration is severe and accompanied by discoloration, it is recommended to re-inspect the product indicators, and use it only after confirming that it meets the requirements.
