Product Overview

A paste of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water can be used for small spills.

Product Benefits

· De-icing (Top Use): Safer, less corrosive alternative to rock salt for airport runways and roads.

· Industrial & Chemical: Acts as a buffering agent (pH balance), reducing agent for precious metals, and a tanning/fixing agent in leather and textile dyeing.

· Other Uses: Food additive (E237), microbial nutrient for fermentation, and enzyme stabilizer in personal care (≤0.34% concentration).

Usage

· De-icing & Runways (largest use):

It's the eco-friendly alternative to chloride-based salts. It melts ice effectively at low temperatures and has low aquatic toxicity, making it the go-to for airport runways and some city roads.

· Oil & Gas Drilling:

Added to drilling fluids as a highly soluble, clay-stabilizing agent. It protects shale formations and prevents pipe corrosion in deep, high-temperature wells.

· Textile Dyeing & Printing:

Used as a reducing agent to fix dyes onto fibers and as a buffer to control pH in acid-dye baths for wool and nylon.

· Chemical Industry:

Serves as a key intermediate. When heated, it decomposes to produce oxalic acid or sodium hydrosulfite (a bleaching agent). It’s also used in electroplating as a brightening additive.

· Construction:

Added to cement and mortar as a set-accelerator, helping concrete harden faster in cold weather.

No, but dust can form explosive mixtures with air, and it releases flammable gases when heated.

How is it made?

Usually by neutralizing formic acid with sodium hydroxide, or as a by-product in industrial synthesis.

Is it safe in cosmetics?

Yes, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel deems it safe at up to 0.34% in formulations.
